Walk-in key duplication in Philadelphia — what we cut while you wait

Most people call a locksmith when something goes wrong. Walk-in key duplication is the other side of the business — fast, planned, no emergency. Here's what we cut while you wait at 702 W Girard Avenue, and when it makes sense to walk in versus call for mobile service.

Why walk in instead of calling for mobile service?

Mobile service makes sense when you're locked out or need a lock changed at your home or office. Key duplication is different. If you have a working key in hand, there's no reason to wait for a technician to come to you. Walk in, hand us the key, and walk out 5 to 15 minutes later with copies.

It's also typically less expensive. A mobile call involves dispatch time and a service fee. At the shop, you're paying for the cut and the key blank — that's it. For anyone in North Philly, Northern Liberties, Fishtown, or Poplar, we're a short trip from most addresses.

What we cut while you wait

Standard residential house keys. The vast majority of walk-ins. Moved into a row home in Fishtown or adding a set for a new roommate in West Philly? Bring the original and we'll have copies in minutes. We carry blanks for Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, Baldwin, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most other residential brands.

Mailbox keys. A lot of Philadelphia apartment buildings and older row homes use small flat mailbox keys that people assume can only be replaced at the post office. They can't. Bring it in.

File cabinet and desk keys. Standard wafer keys for office furniture. Fast cut, minimal wait.

Padlock keys. Master Lock, Abus, American Lock, Brinks. We keep a wide range of blanks in stock.

Basic transponder car keys for many older vehicles. We can cut the key blade and program the transponder chip for a number of makes and models while you wait — including many Honda, Toyota, Ford, and GM vehicles from the late 1990s through mid-2000s. Call ahead if you're not sure whether your vehicle qualifies for a walk-in transponder cut.

What we can't always do as a walk-in

Modern proximity keys, push-to-start fobs, and smart keys for newer vehicles (roughly 2015 and newer, depending on make) often require on-vehicle programming. The car has to be present so we can communicate with the vehicle's computer during pairing. That's a mobile job, not a walk-in cut.

High-security keys with laser or sidewinder cuts sometimes require key code lookups rather than direct duplication. We have the equipment, but some of these take longer than a standard walk-in. When in doubt, call us at (267) 587-7778 and describe the key — we'll tell you upfront what's involved before you make the trip.

The shop at 702 W Girard Avenue

We've been at this address since 1993 — 33 years of building up key-cutting machines, blank inventory, and knowledge of what's in Philadelphia's housing stock. When you walk in with an unusual key — an old mortise key from a pre-war row home, an odd padlock, an import car key — we recognize it or we figure it out. That's what 33 years in one city does.

We're in North Philadelphia, on Girard Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets. Street parking is available on Girard. The 15 Girard trolley stops directly on our block if you're coming by SEPTA.

Walk-ins are welcome during shop hours. For unusual or high-security keys, a quick call before you come in is worth it — we can confirm we have the blank in stock and save you a wasted trip.

Walk-in vs. mobile: quick decision guide

Walk in if: you have your key in hand and need copies, you want the fastest possible turnaround, you have an unusual key you'd like us to look at in person, or you're already nearby.

Call for mobile service if: you're locked out and can't get in, you need a lock changed or rekeyed, or you have a newer vehicle that needs on-vehicle key programming.

When you're not sure — call (267) 587-7778. We'll tell you which option makes more sense before you drive anywhere. That's true whether you need one key made or a full lock change on a North Philly row home.
